What an Arizona firm gives a Tucson business

Pima County businesses often work with a national chain or with software, and both handle the federal side competently. Arizona is where the gaps show up: the small business income election, Transaction Privilege Tax classifications, City of Tucson licensing, withholding elections. K&R carries 1000+ active clients and a 4.9 Google rating, and most of our Tucson work started with a state letter nobody knew how to answer.

Arizona statute is daily work here
The Arizona small business income election, TPT classifications, A-4 withholding and the business personal property filing are not annual curiosities for us. They come up every week, across hundreds of Arizona returns.

WHO WE WORK WITH

How we start with a new Tucson client

First a discovery call, which is mostly us asking questions. Then we read the last two or three returns. That review almost always surfaces three things: a deduction that was available and unclaimed, an exposure nobody flagged, and one item fixable inside the current month. You get it in writing, we execute together, and the file stays open on our side instead of going cold until February.

Arizona and Tucson rules worth knowing

Arizona charges the seller a Transaction Privilege Tax rather than charging the buyer a sales tax, and Tucson adds its own municipal layer with separate classifications for retail, contracting, commercial leasing and lodging. Picking the wrong classification is the most common reason a growing Tucson business ends up with a state letter. One change matters for landlords: since January 1, 2025, Arizona cities can no longer tax long term residential rental income, though the property still gets registered with the county assessor and short term lodging remains taxable. Withholding, the A-4 election new hires sign and the annual business equipment filing round out the calendar, and we check rates against what the Department of Revenue currently publishes rather than what was true last year.
Most tax firms see you once a year. We build long-term relationships because consistent guidance compounds over time.

FAQs

Get answers to common questions about our tax preparation, accounting, and advisory services for businesses and individuals in your area.
Do I have to be in Mesa to work with K&R from Tucson?
No. Tucson clients send documents through an encrypted portal and meet by video or phone, and replies come back inside 1-2 business days. The Mesa office at 6861 E Main St is available if you prefer signing and reviewing in person, roughly an hour and forty five minutes from central Tucson.
What makes an Arizona based CPA different for a Tucson business?
The federal return looks the same everywhere. Arizona is where firms diverge: the small business income election, TPT classification and licensing, A-4 withholding elections, the annual business personal property filing. We handle those across hundreds of Arizona clients, so the state side is routine rather than research.
I rent out a house in Tucson. Do I still owe city tax on the rent?
For long term residential rentals of 30 days or more, no. Arizona cities lost the authority to tax that income as of January 1, 2025. You still register the property with the county assessor, and short term lodging under 30 days is a different classification that remains taxable.
Can you handle payroll if my employees are in Tucson and elsewhere?
Yes. We process payroll with direct deposit, new hire reporting and payroll tax filings, including staff spread across state lines. Registration in each state where an employee actually works is part of the setup.
What does the first meeting cost?
Nothing. The first consultation is free. We look at your last returns and your current setup, then tell you what we would change and what our work would cost before you commit to anything.
