CPA, Tax Preparation and Accounting in Cottonwood, AZ

Looking for a CPA in Cottonwood, AZ? K&R Strategic Partners is an Arizona accounting firm whose CPAs and licensed Enrolled Agents prepare returns and run bookkeeping, payroll and IRS work for Verde Valley businesses and families. The firm is based in Mesa at 6861 E Main St, everything moves over a secure portal with video meetings, and there is no charge for the first conversation. Cottonwood sits in the middle of Arizona wine country, so the clients who reach us are often tasting rooms, restaurants, tour operators and lodging owners, and that mix of alcohol, food and visitors carries more overlapping rules than any other small business combination in the state.

What a Verde Valley business is actually up against

A tasting room that pours wine, sells bottles to take home, ships to customers in other states and serves food is operating in several tax regimes at once. Restaurants and bars, retail sales and, where shipping is involved, a direct shipment license and Arizona luxury tax on wine each behave differently, and the direct shipment license itself requires a transaction privilege tax number for the payment of both TPT and luxury tax on wine sold into Arizona. Add tips, seasonal staff and a lodging component and the compliance load gets heavier than the revenue suggests.

Alcohol, food and retail split properly
Pouring, bottle sales, shipping and food service are not one revenue line. We separate them, map them to the right classifications and set up the reporting so the monthly filing stops being an estimate.

Direct shipment obligations understood before you ship
Arizona's direct shipment license under A.R.S. 4-203.04 requires a TPT number for transaction privilege and luxury taxes on wine sold to Arizona purchasers, and shipping into other states brings their rules with it. Both get handled before the first order goes out.

Tips, seasonal staff and payroll done right
Tip reporting, allocated tips and a workforce that triples for a festival weekend are ordinary here and are exactly where payroll penalties come from. Payroll runs from our office with every federal and state filing included.

WHO WE WORK WITH

How we start with a new Cottonwood client

We open with a conversation about the business, then ask for the last two or three returns, a recent TPT filing and your payroll reports. Misclassified revenue, tip reporting gaps and inventory nobody has really tracked are what surface. You receive that in writing with a value attached to each item, along with a fixed fee, and you decide from there.

Arizona and Yavapai County rules worth knowing

Arizona's tax falls on the seller for the privilege of doing business, not on the purchaser as a sales tax, and restaurants and bars, retail sales and hotels each sit in their own classification, so a business doing all three reports in all three. Wine shipped to Arizona purchasers under a direct shipment licence carries transaction privilege tax and Arizona luxury tax, and the licence application itself asks for the TPT number those are paid under. Cottonwood's municipal portion goes to the Arizona Department of Revenue on the same return as the state and Yavapai County. Purchases of equipment, barrels or packaging from sellers who never charged Arizona tax generally owe use tax when they arrive.
Most tax firms see you once a year. We build long-term relationships because consistent guidance compounds over time.

FAQs

Get answers to common questions about our tax preparation, accounting, and advisory services for businesses and individuals in your area.
We pour, sell bottles and serve food. Is that one tax classification?
No. Serving food and drink, selling bottles to take away and any lodging component fall into different classifications with different treatment, and one return can carry all of them. Mapping the revenue streams once is what stops the monthly filing from being guesswork.
We want to ship wine to customers out of state. What do we need?
An Arizona direct shipment license requires a federal basic permit, a current state licence to produce wine and a transaction privilege tax number used to pay TPT and luxury taxes on wine sold to Arizona purchasers. Shipping into another state brings that state's licensing and tax rules too, so the list depends on where your customers are.
Our staff triples during festival weekends. How is that handled?
With payroll built for it. We run payroll from our office with direct deposit, new hire reporting, tip reporting and all federal and state filings, so a spike in headcount does not turn into a filing problem two quarters later.
Do we owe Arizona tax on barrels and equipment bought out of state?
Generally yes. If the seller collected no Arizona tax and the goods are used here, use tax applies and belongs on your TPT return. It is a routine finding on a first file review.
Can we get started without a trip to Mesa?
Yes. Everything runs over a secure portal with video or phone meetings and answers inside a business day or two. If you would rather meet face to face, the office is at 6861 E Main St in Mesa.
